Wisbech Grammar School Prep proudly hosted its annual Speech Day, marking the end of another successful academic year. The event was attended by pupils, parents, speaker Mr Petherick, the Mayor of Wisbech, Sidney Imafidon, families, and friends, all gathered to celebrate the achievements and growth of its pupils.
This year’s guest speaker, Mr Petherick, was a long-time friend of Mrs Neaves, Senior Deputy Head of Prep School, who shared an inspiring message with all. In his address, he thanked Mrs Neaves for the opportunity to speak and reflected on their deep personal connection dating back to his childhood. He recalled how Mrs Neaves babysat him and his siblings in the ’80s and early ‘90s, long before the era of modern conveniences like Netflix and smartphones. He also mentioned her unwavering support throughout his life, including cheering him on at the London Olympics in 2012.
He praised Wisbech Grammar School’s incredible history and notable alumni, such as George Russell and actress Claire Goose. Growing up in Hamilton, New Zealand, he attended a large public boys’ school and developed a passion for hockey, debuting for the national team at 18. Now, at 38, he has experienced various careers, from a paperboy to a Deputy Principal at a large international school in Singapore.
He shared valuable lessons from his diverse experiences, emphasising honesty, listening, making good decisions, being curious rather than judgmental, and appreciating parents for their guidance and support.
Mrs Neaves expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated teachers and staff, who are the heart and soul of the school, for their unwavering commitment to nurturing and guiding the pupils. She also thanked parents and families for their invaluable support and partnership in the educational journey of their children.
This year saw significant achievements at Wisbech Grammar School, including the successful expansion of the Kindergarten to include two year olds, enriching the school community with new faces and vibrant energy. The school’s community fundraising efforts were also highlighted, with over £10,000 raised to create an outdoor classroom, a wonderful new addition to the school’s facilities.
Special thanks were given to Mrs Means for her leadership in the outdoor classroom project, the Friends of Wisbech Grammar School for their event hosting, and The English Brothers for constructing the classroom. Following the celebration the classroom was officially opened by Proprietor, Mr Jay Liu.
Mrs Neaves also commended Ms Johnson and the Road Safety Ambassadors for their initiatives to reduce carbon emissions and promote safe travel. Wisbech Grammar School Prep is proud to be the only independent school to achieve the Modeshift Stars Education award for a Good Travel Plan.
Mrs Neaves said, “Looking ahead, the school is excited about the opportunities the next academic year will bring. The growth in pupil numbers due to changes in other schools and glowing praise from current families will see new teachers joining the team, including Mr Shields in Prep 6.”
In closing, Mrs Neaves shared a quote from Nelson Mandela: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” She encouraged everyone to use their education, talents, and passions to create a better, more inclusive, and compassionate world.
Wisbech Grammar School Prep extends its gratitude to everyone for making this year a success and wishes all a wonderful, restful summer.
